About Us
Blue Robotics makes low-cost, high-performance components for marine robotics to enable the next generation of ocean exploration! Based in Torrance, California, we are a young and innovative company with a diverse and international customer base.

Our Story
It all started when we decided that we wanted to try to send a solar powered robotic boat from Los Angeles to Hawaii.

It was a fun side project: build a small GPS-guided solar-powered boat and send it from Los Angeles to Hawaii, completely autonomously. We wanted to do something cool that had never been done before.

While researching components for the project, we realized that the limiting component was the thruster. We needed something high quality to resist saltwater, operate continuously, and be efficient for months on end. The least expensive options we could find were over $550 each, pushing us over our budget. Not to mention, these thrusters needed maintenance every 50 hours and were designed with outdated technology. As we did more research, we found that many people are building their own marine robots and are having the same problem. Most of them have simply given up or used less-than-ideal solutions, like using brushless motors directly in water that have to be replaced when they corrode. Some people tried to build their own thrusters, but with little success.

We set out to design a thruster that is affordable, reliable, and more capable than anything out there to enable these people and many more to explore the ocean. Now here we are.

The smooth, stable, and highly maneuverable ROV is comprised of six thrusters, a rugged frame, and quickswappable batteries. Powerful but dimmable lights provide excellent illumination for the live HD video feed.

Like all Blue Robotics products, we created the BlueROV2 with high-quality parts, meticulous design, and rugged reliability with proven success in the field.

Equipped with six powerful T200 thrusters and Basic ESCs, the BlueROV2 has the best thrust-to-weight ratio in its class to perform demanding tasks. It is ideal for operations in shallow to moderate waters, with a standard 100m depth rating and up to 300m tether lengths available. 

The BlueROV2 uses the open-source ArduSub software and PixHawk autopilot to provide autonomous capabilities rarely seen in mini ROVs and hackability paralleled by none. Blue Robotics actively develops and updates its software to enhance the BlueROV2's functionality.

Your vehicle will arrive almost-ready-to-dive, with pre-built sub-assemblies and instructional materials to make the experience as straightforward and enjoyable as possible. Additional items including the topside computer, gamepad controller and batteries are not included.

Maritime RobotX Challenge, 8-15 December 2018, Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. Advancements in autonomous vehicle technology across all domains - air, land, and water - are moving fast in public and private sectors, including academia through research and competitions. In support of these advancements, the Maritime RobotX ... MoreChallenge was created. In 2012, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) launched the first biennial Maritime RobotX Challenge.

RobotX is RoboNation's most complex robotic competition to-date. Through this competition, we aspire to engage regional partners around the Pacific Rim while creating a new, high-level competition focused on autonomous surface vehicle platforms and sensors. The third RobotX Challenge will be held in December 2018 in Hawaii.

A new element of RobotX is the creation of the RobotX Forum, intended to be an interactive gathering with presentations from academia, senior officials, and industry leaders involved in the development and use of autonomous maritime systems. The second RobotX Forum will be held in December 2019, location to be announced soon.
