Cone Penetration Testing
Cone penetration testing (CPT or commonly CPTU/PCPT) involves thrusting a 10cm² or 15cm² cross-sectional area cone into the ground or seabed at a constant penetration rate of 2cm/s. Continuous and simultaneous measurements of cone resistance (qc) sleeve friction (fs), pore pressure (u), and inclination (ix/y) are recorded in real-time.

Cone penetration testing can be performed on land using top-push CPT systems and CPT trucks. They have been adapted specifically for nearshore and offshore operations for the oil and gas and renewable energy sectors in the form of seabed CPT and wireline (downhole) CPT systems.

The results from a CPT test can, in principle, be used to evaluate:
  • Stratification
  • Soil type
  • Soil density and in situ stress conditions
  • Mechanical soil properties:
    • Shear strength parameters
    • Deformation and consolidation characteristics
