Structureless chalk, regardless of its outcropping age, is widely accepted to be a difficult material to recover in an undisturbed state with conventional drilling and sampling techniques. Furthermore, the engineering assessment of recovered chalk is hampered when the formation encountered contains large sized or large quantities of flint nodules which ... Moretend to de-structure the chalk during the sampling process. Additionally, the engineering description of the material is limited based on the maximum clast size observable due to the diameter of sampling equipment used. This paper describes an innovative method employed, facilitating recovery of larger diameter samples of undisturbed material showing a truer in situ representation of the weathered or structureless chalk with minimal circumferential disturbance or remoulding, together with a discussion on influence of selected geotechnical parameters.

The last major conference on Chalk was held almost 30 years ago in 1989 in Brighton. Since that time, considerable work has been undertaken internationally through research and in many major projects in Chalk, advancing our understanding of its origin, nature and engineering behavior. The 2018 conference therefore seeks to bring together the knowledge and experience gained in the last three decades by presenting research and case histories to provide a definitive up to date perspective on a wide range of Technical Themes relating to engineering in Chalk.

It is planned that the conference will include a technical exhibition, a conference and technical tours.

Otary is a Belgian knowledge center for offshore wind energy that develops, finances, constructs and operates offshore wind farms in the Belgian North Sea.
